In Malta, the salaries are not so high, as the quality of life what you can enjoy in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.

Maltese salaries are lower than the EU average, but taxes on your income are even lower. This feature is the fiscal trick behind why you can kiss a beer and eat a pizza without guilty conscience in a seaside restaurant.

I asked my friends from Malta and those who are foreigners about their salaries. Of course, I also researched all available official information about the income from employment in Malta. According to the Salary Explorer’s survey, the highest Maltese salaries are above € 8,000. There are expats, who are earning more money in the Mediterranean Paradise Islands, but a wage more than 8k euros is extremely high, compared with the average incomes.

Malta Salary

The average salary in Malta is around 2000 euros, but the official median is 1750 EUR. The minimum wage is estimated for € 700. Unfortunately, I know employed people, who are earning less. During winter, wages in the hospitality/tourism sector are also decreasing, especially, when the owner spends a couple of months in a tropical place, meanwhile, the restaurant/hotel/car wash waits for the next season. Drivers and couriers are earning an average of € 975, which ridiculously little, and don’t forget that they should know the exact location of all hidden alleys in Malta.

If you’re insisting on bargaining, you can earn EUR 2.60/hour at a fabulous windshield factory at Gozó, as a trained worker.

However, a professional cleaner can get up to € 7 for an hour if she/he is outstanding. For the same amount of money, you can find a babysitter job. UPDATE: one dear Facebook fan states that private (non-industrial) cleaners would say about 35 to 45 euros for 3-4 hours of work.

What kind of job should you search for in Malta?

The hospitality sector is the most obvious choice, because recruitment is continuous for better or worse jobs, as bartenders, waiters, chefs, sinks but the are always looking for managers as well. However, the real money is in the gambling sector. There are legends about the salaries in the Maltese online gaming industry. Some friends of mine are earning around 2500 euros, mainly in the gaming related call centres. Higher positions come with hefty salaries, I know a security expert for online casinos and he not only earns 9000 euros, but accommodation and food are also free for him.

I would point out that although there is no discrimination between Maltese and foreigner employed people, regarding salaries under the law. But you will earn less than a local guy for sure. Except for some multinational companies and the local EU institution.

You may expect 1300 euros when you find some receptionist job or taking care of older adults/children. If you are a personal trainer or a coach in sports, this 1300 euros is the theoretical salary, but in your place, I would leave the island nation fast because sooner or later you will feel the sensation of starving.

All another employed workforce may fit in the next cell between 1300 and 2000 euros. Engineers, tourism experts and even rookie lawyers should expect this amount of monthly wage.

Finance and IT pays more than 2000 euros, but it depends on the industry. VIP company service providers offer better salaries. Update: another Facebook fan let us know that Java developers receive net 3800 euros+ full expat package.

The creative jobs are paying around 2500 euros, up to even 3500.

Seasonal jobs in Malta

If you are interested in the adventure sector, tour leaders get 20 euros for more or less two hours of paddling. Drivers of tourist jeeps in Gozo receive 25 euros/day, but they have the chance to earn some additional euros with private activity.

There are helpdesk and call centre possibilities, one of my friends makes 2700 euros with Hungarian/English/German knowledge at a multinational company.

Realtor industry works very well in Malta. Naturally, your salary will depend on the number of sold properties. If you would work for the market leader franchises (RE/MAX and Frank Salt), you will offer your services in exchange for a commission. Real estate is a stable business in Malta because the island will not grow, so the prices must do it as the amount of available land will not change, but more and more people would love to live in Malta or own a residential property. Malta is a terribly overbuilt mini-country, and the prices are increasing very fast!

Diving instructor jobs in Malta

This is a specialised profession with its international prices. If you are on the underwater market, you will know exactly how much can you earn in Malta. Those local divers I know are not receiving too much, but the owners of the diver academies are damn wealthy.
